Apply a 50mm layer in spring and top it up in summer to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Lucerne hay, pea straw and sugar cane are all great mulches for roses. In winter, apply a 40mm layer of composted manure to condition the soil and feed. Then give them a handful of food every four to six months during the flowering season. Give them organic rose food as soon as the buds appear and water well. Roses are always hungry and if you feed them well they’ll produce glorious flowers.

Any lingering moisture on the leaves can cause fungal problems. Make sure you water just the soil, not the plant. When they are young, roses need to be kept well watered, but as they mature you can cut back watering to twice a week. A few weeks before planting, add at least half a 30-litre bag of compost and aged manure per rose, and fork in. Roses will happily grow in many soil types, but good drainage is essential. Bare-root roses need to be planted in winter when they are leafless, but potted roses can be planted all year round. Most Aussie climates are suitable, with the exception of the tropical far north. Northerly and westerly aspects are usually the sunniest spots. 'A good floral designer will be able to educate and help you make thoughtful design decisions within your budget.Roses need plenty of sunshine – about six hours or more each day. 'If you are looking to save money be sure to communicate that with your florists,' he says. 'Seasonal flowers are not 'cheaper,'' she says. 'Seasonal flowers mean that you are getting those flowers at their best. According to florist Jessica De Corse, founder of Ellamah, 'seasonal' and 'cheap' have become synonymous in the world of wedding flowers, but it's time to put that misconception to rest. But 'at their best' doesn't mean for a lower price. While most flower varieties can be sourced at any time of the year (with lots of pre-planning and for the right price, that is), working with what's in-season means you're getting the flowers when they're absolute best.
